In recent years, the hostility between Iran and Israel has escalated dramatically. Today, the war between Israel and Iran has officially begun—no longer just threats or covert operations, but open military conflict marked by missile strikes, casualties, and widespread fear. What may seem to the world like a geopolitical conflict or just another chapter in the long and complicated history of the Middle East. But for the believers we need to knowledge the spiritual realities behind the headlines, this at its root, a spiritual battle rooted in ancient ideologies and prophetic truth.

The regime’s leaders speak openly of their desire to destroy Israel and erase it from the map. And yet, at the same time, Israel stands as a nation miraculously reborn in fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy, a land where God is still working powerfully today.

This tension—between both countries –raises urgent questions:

  • Why Is Iran a Threat to Israel?
  • What drives their leaders’ determination to destroy it?
  • And most importantly, does the Bible say anything about this unfolding drama?

As a ministry rooted in both biblical truth and real-life experience in Israel, we want to help you see what’s happening not only with physical eyes but with spiritual insight. Let’s take a closer look at the real reasons behind Iran’s hostility, how it ties into Islamic end-time beliefs, and what the Word of God tells us about the future.

Why Is Iran a Threat to Israel?

Since 1979, when the Islamic Republic of Iran was established after a radical revolution, its leaders have consistently declared their intention to destroy the State of Israel. They don’t even refer to it by name, instead calling it “the Zionist regime,” and vow that it must be “wiped off the map.”

Iran funds, trains, and arms terrorist groups that surround Israel, including:

  • Hezbollah (Lebanon)
  • Hamas and Islamic Jihad (Gaza)
  • Houthis (Yemen)

These groups are actively involved in launching rockets, drones, and carrying out terror operations aimed at Israeli civilians. Many of their weapons and tactics are supplied by Iran.

In addition to conventional threats, Israel is gravely concerned about Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Despite international denials, Israel and many Western intelligence agencies believe Iran is dangerously close to developing nuclear weapons. Combined with its apocalyptic ideology, this makes the Iranian threat not merely political—but existential.

Iran’s End-Time Theology- Twelver Shi'ism

To understand why Iran’s leaders are so aggressively hostile to Israel, we must look at their religious ideology, especially Twelver Shi’a Islam, which shapes Iran’s government and military strategy.

This apocalyptic vision is not just a theological curiosity—it directly shapes the policies of Iran’s leaders. They see themselves as preparing the way for the Mahdi and even believe that accelerating global conflict may hasten his return.

Who Is the Mahdi ?

The word “Mahdi” means “guided one” or “the rightly guided” in Arabic. In Twelver Shi’a Islam (the dominant form in Iran), the Mahdi is a messianic figure believed to be the hidden Twelfth Imam. Twelvers believe he is alive, in occultation, and will return during a time of global chaos to establish justice and lead the world under Islamic rule.

This apocalyptic vision is not just a theological curiosity—it directly shapes the policies of Iran’s leaders. They see themselves as preparing the way for the Mahdi and even believe that accelerating global conflict may hasten his return.

What the Qur'an Says (and Doesn’t Say)

The Mahdi is not mentioned directly in the Qur’an, but Shi’a scholars draw from a few verses to support this eschatological view:

  • Surat An-Nur 24:55 “Allah has promised those who have believed… that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth…”
  • Surat Al-Qasas 28:5 “We desired to favor those who were oppressed… and to make them leaders…”
  • Surat As-Saf 61:9 “It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion…”

Shi’a interpretations apply these to the coming Mahdi, whom they expect to lead a final Islamic victory over all other faiths.

If you are reading these verses and finding them strikingly familiar, you’re not alone. They echo themes that appear in the Bible, especially in verses that describe Jesus’ return and His future Kingdom. Consider:

  • Revelation 20:4 — “I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge…. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.”
  • Matthew 5:5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
  • Philippians 2:10–11 — “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow… and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord…”

Shi’a interpretations apply Qur’anic verses to the coming Mahdi, whom they expect to lead a final Islamic victory over all other faiths. In contrast, the Bible speaks of Jesus, the suffering Savior, returning in glory to reign as King of kings, not through conquest but through righteousness and justice.

Persia in Biblical Prophecy: Iran’s in the Last Days

Iran—known in biblical times as Persia—has a direct and unmistakable mention in the prophetic Scriptures. In Ezekiel 38–39, Persia is listed among the key nations that will join a northern confederation led by a mysterious figure named Gog, who will invade the land of Israel in the last days.

“Persia, Cush, and Put will be with them, all with shields and helmets.” (Ezekiel 38:5)

This isn’t merely political maneuvering—it is part of a divine setup. God allows this gathering so that He may reveal His power and glory by defending His people with supernatural intervention. The invading armies will be defeated not by Israel’s might, but by God’s hand alone.

“I will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Sovereign Lord… I will execute judgment on him with plague and bloodshed… and I will show my greatness and my holiness, and I will make myself known in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.” (Ezekiel 38:21–23)

Persia’s role in this prophecy is sobering. While modern Iran may see itself as a rising power opposing Israel, God has already declared the outcome. These events are not outside of His control; they are a stage for Him to make His name known. Ultimately, it will not be the might of nations but the majesty of the Lord that will be exalted.

This prophetic picture reinforces why Iran’s aggression toward Israel is more than a geopolitical issue—it’s part of a larger spiritual drama unfolding according to God’s Word.

Today, as we watch the very real and devastating conflict between Israel and Iran continue to unfold, many believers are asking: Is this the beginning of the fulfillment of Ezekiel 38? Could this be the war of Gog and Magog?

The honest answer is—we don’t know for sure. While the details of prophecy will become clearer as events unfold, we can say with confidence that none of this is taking God by surprise. Every headline fits within His sovereign plan.

It’s possible that we are seeing the beginning of alliances and hostilities that will lead to those final prophetic battles. Or it may be another foreshadowing of what is still to come. Either way, we know that history is moving in the direction foretold by Scripture.

The question we must ask ourselves is not simply “What’s going to happen next?” but “What Should We Do?”

What Should We Do?

  • Pray for Israel: As threats intensify and the reality of war presses in, lift up the people of Israel—Jews and Arabs alike—who are living in fear, loss, and uncertainty. Pray especially that they would come to know their Messiah, Jesus. May their eyes be opened, their hearts softened, and their hope restored in the One who came first to save and will soon return to reign.
  • Pray for the Iranian people: Behind the headlines and the oppressive regime are millions of ordinary people—many suffering under tyranny and hardship. Pray that they would encounter the love and truth of Jesus Christ. Iran is one of the fastest-growing places for underground Christianity in the world. Pray for the courage and perseverance of those secretly following Christ and for a continued harvest of souls in the midst of darkness.
  • Pray for the suffering: War brings with it deep pain—families torn apart, homes destroyed, lives lost. Pray for those who are grieving, displaced, or traumatized on both sides of the conflict. May the God of all comfort meet them in their sorrow and reveal Himself through the compassionate witness of His people.
  • Pray for the believers in both Israel and Iran: In the midst of conflict, God is raising up faithful followers of Jesus in both nations. Pray for boldness, unity, and protection over these brothers and sisters. May they shine as lights in the darkness, ministering healing and truth with wisdom and love.
  • Pray for the global Church: That we would be awake and alert, discerning the times and ready to respond in faith, not fear. May we live holy and obedient lives as we await our Blessed Hope.
  • Stand firm in the Word of God: In a world filled with misinformation and confusion, Scripture is our anchor. Immerse yourself daily in God’s Word. Let His promises shape your worldview and guide your actions.
  • Proclaim the Gospel with urgency: People are searching for answers. In the face of war and uncertainty, we carry the only message that can truly save and restore. Let us be faithful to share the hope of Jesus boldly, lovingly, and without delay.
  • Encourage one another: As we see prophetic events unfold, we are reminded in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 to “encourage one another and build each other up.” This is the time to strengthen the Body of Christ, to gather in fellowship, and to remind one another that our Redeemer is near.

“Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him…” (Revelation 1:7)

These days are not meant to paralyze us with fear but to mobilize us with purpose. Jesus is coming. Let us be ready—and help others be ready too.
